Compare current products, not old screenshots
LibreChat’s current documentation covers agents, MCP, artifacts, memory, and chat features. LobeChat’s upstream repository now uses LobeHub branding and presents an agent-oriented product. Old descriptions of either as just a basic chat clone miss the current scope.
Record the versions, deployment methods, and features in your trial. Otherwise, you may mistake a hosted-only feature or a release difference for a fundamental difference between the projects.
Configuration: who will own the system?
LibreChat provides environment and YAML configuration guidance alongside its Docker installation. LobeHub also documents self-hosting and environment configuration. Both require decisions beyond how the chat window looks.
For a shared installation, assign ownership of provider access, storage, upgrades, and recovery. For an individual, compare that work with the convenience of the relevant hosted option. A configurable system pays off only when the control is useful to you.
Agents: evaluate a repeatable task
The word “agent” can refer to very different workflows. LibreChat documents assistants with tools and file handling; LobeHub emphasizes agents working in groups and organized projects. Feature names do not establish how reliably a task will complete.
Use a bounded task with a known success condition: review a short brief, identify contradictions, and produce a draft. Repeat it with the same model and instructions. Compare setup effort, visibility into tool use, and how easily you can correct the result.
Data and cost: follow each dependency
A self-hosted app can still use external models and tools. Map where conversations are stored, which providers receive context, and where files go during retrieval or tool calls. This is more useful than a single “private” label.
Include hosting, inference, storage, and any optional services in your estimate. Before moving existing work, test a small export and recovery process. Do not assume either app can preserve every field from the other’s conversation format.

Use a task you already understand. Keep the model, prompt, and settings as similar as possible so you are evaluating the interface.

Does LibreChat support agents too?
Yes. Its current documentation includes agents and MCP, among other capabilities. Agent support alone is not a reason to choose LobeHub over LibreChat.
Why does this guide mention LobeHub?
The upstream repository associated with LobeChat now uses LobeHub branding. The older search name remains common, but current-version checks should use the upstream project.
Which is best for a solo user?
Try the workflow you repeat most. If you do not need to administer a service or coordinate agents, also evaluate a personal client before committing to a self-hosted stack.
