Setup: opening a client versus running a service
TypingMind’s personal app starts in your browser with provider keys. Its static self-host option is different from operating a shared backend. Open WebUI recommends Docker for deployment, while also documenting a desktop app. Docker is a recommended path, not its only installation method.
For a solo user, ask whether administering a service helps the work you actually do. For a group, ask who will own updates, access, backups, and recovery. A successful first chat is only the first part of a sustainable self-hosted setup.
Costs: compare the whole setup
TypingMind separates the personal interface license from API usage and additional cloud storage. Check the tier containing your required features before comparing prices. A one-time license is not a bundle of model credits.
For Open WebUI, include the computer or server, model inference, storage, and your maintenance time. Existing hardware can change that calculation substantially. Neither choice is automatically cheaper: use a week of your actual requests to estimate the model bill.
Local models and privacy are separate decisions
Open WebUI documents Ollama and remote provider connections. TypingMind also documents custom and local models. Local-model availability alone does not settle the choice; test the connection from the device where you will use the interface.
TypingMind offers optional cloud sync. Open WebUI stores data in your deployment. In either case, choosing a remote model sends request content to that provider. Decide separately where conversations are saved, where inference happens, and how you will restore a backup.

Try a research task with two plausible explanations. Follow each for several messages, then return to the original evidence. Evaluate how the interface helps you organize the resulting work, rather than judging model quality from two different answers.
